As I hear about them I will post notices of currently available competitions. However, you will also be able to pick up these notifications on Writegear's Facebook page and WriteGear's blog.

Note: Not all these competitions are Free Entry. You may have to pay the entry fee in a foreign currency. Where possible use PayPal or another reputable currency payment service, rather than give out credit card details.

Some competitions are designed to get copy to publish in a printed or online magazine. Be aware that you will be expected not to publish that piece of writing elsewhere during the contest and afterwards if you are a winner.

BBC short story competition - Britain

One of the world's most prestigious for a single short story, with the winning author receiving £15,000, the runner-up £3,000 and three further shortlisted authors £500 each.

Bristol Short Story competition

An annual international writing competition open to all published and unpublished, UK and non-UK based writers. They publish an annual anthology of the winning stories as well as presenting cash prizes.

Fan Story Book of the Month - Chapters are posted and hosted online for the month while voting is happening

Created by FanStory.com - Contest is free to writers and continues monthly.
Each month one book is selected to be the Book of the Month. Completed and uncompleted books are eligible. A vote determines which book wins the contest. One chapter is featured in the voting booth. All book chapters posted during the previous month are automatically considered. FanStory.com picks five to ten chapters out of the monthly posts to be nominees for the contest.

CBC Short Story competition

All Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada can submit original, unpublished stories stories between 1200 and 1500 words.
Competition opens: beginning of September for two months.

Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition

Writers of short fiction are encouraged to enter the 2014 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition aims to support the efforts and talent of emerging writers of short fiction. Judged by Lorian Hemingway, granddaughter of Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway, is herself an author of three critically acclaimed books: Walking into the River, Walk on Water, and A World Turned Over. Ms. Hemingway is the competition's final judge.

Commonwealth Writers competition

(Open to residents of any British Commonwealth country)

The Short Story Prize is awarded annually for the best piece of unpublished short fiction (2000-5000 words). Regional winners will receive £2,500 and the Overall Winner will receive £5,000. Translators will receive additional prize money.

The Short Story Prize will open for entry mid-September and will close mid-November. Entries can be made via the online application form.

Frank O'Conner Short Story competition

The Munster Literature Centre Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award is open to published authors with works published over the previous 12 months. Publishers and authors are encouraged to submit books (6 print copies) prior to the competition closing usually in March of the year of the current competition. The prize is awarded to the author of the book judged to be the best collection of stories published in English for the first time anywhere in the world. Self-published authors are not eligible.

Fish Publishing Short Story competion

Fish Publishing runs four annual international writing contests.
1. Fish Short Story Prize - Max. Length: 5,000 words
2. Fish Flash Fiction Prize - 300 words
3. Fish Poetry Prize - 300 words
4. Fish Short Memoir Prize - 4,000 words
The Annual Fish Anthology containing the winning entries is launched during the West Cork Literary Festival. Fish holds a number of courses and offers writing critique services.

Glimmer Train competitions

Two sisters welcome new writers, and are happy to consider any original short story for adults that has not appeared in a print publication.
1. Very Short Fiction (1st place - $1,500): Welcome in January,April, July, and October.
2. Short Story Award for New Writers (1st place - $1,500): Welcome in February, May, August, November.
3. Fiction Open (1st place - $2,500): Welcome in June and December (closes January 2).
4. Family Matters (1st place - $1,500): Welcome in March and September.
5. Standard Category ($700): Welcome in January, May, September.

Grain Magazine submissions

1. Poetry: (to a max of 100 lines) Poetry of any style - including prose poetry - up to 100 lines.
2. Fiction: (to a max of 2,500 words)
3. Short fiction in any form - including postcard fiction (Flash fiction?) - to a maximum of 2500 words.

$4,500 in prizes to be won! Now open to email submissions and online payment. Grain has a nine-month reading period, September 1st to May 31st. Submissions outside that won't be considred.

George Markstein Fiction Prize

The George Markstein Fiction Prize for fiction of at least 60,000 pages (novel) run by Kingston Writing School, Kingston in Thames. The Prize is open to all past and present Kingston University PG students of Creative Writing for works of fiction in any genre.

Society of Women Writers, Tasmania

The SWWT welcomes all writers (male or female), of all ages, worldwide, so please don't hesitate, consider entering this competition, bearing in mind stories written 'for' children, or poetry is not accepted in this instance.

Novel Rocket's Launch Pad contest

This contest is for anyone who has never published a novel with a traditional publisher. one writer will have his or her winning entry submitted directly to a hand-picked agent or editor, bypassing the dreaded slush pile.

Suspense/Crime/Mystery/Thriller; General Fiction; Historical (WWII or earlier); Middle Grade/Young Adult; Contemporary Romance; Speculative Fiction genres. Prepare a one- to two-page (single-spaced) synopsis for each fiction entry, along with the first 3,000 – 4,000 words of the manuscript.

NZ Writers College Short Story Competition

The annual NZ Writers' College Short Story Competition is open to any emerging writer residing in New Zealand or Australia, who has had fewer than four stories/articles published in any format (print or digital). First Prize: $1 000.00 and publication in an anthology of winning stories; Second Prize: $ 500.00 and publication in an anthology of winning stories; People's Choice Award $ 500.00

AUT New Zealand Creative Writing Competition

Aimed at younger writers this competition is for short stories written by short stories and poetry writers aged 15-20 although there is a caterory for over-20s. Check back to find the current conmpetition.

Writers Digest Popular fiction short story competition

This Year's deadline: October 15, 2014.

Bartleby Snopes' Sixth Annual Dialogue Only Writing Contest

Closing date: 15th September, 2014
Prizes: A minimum of $500 will be awarded, with at least $300 going to the grand prize winner. Our five finalists will also appear in Issue 13 of the magazine. Last year we awarded $945 in prize money.
Entry Fee: $10.00 USD
Compose a short story entirely of dialogue. You may use as many characters as you want. Your entry does not have to follow standard rules for writing dialogue. Your entry cannot use any narration (this includes tag lines such as he said, she said, etc.).

Bare Fiction Prize

Bare Fiction Magazine has launched its inaugural Bare Fiction Prize with awards for Poetry, Flash Fiction, and Short Story.Closing date: 31st October. 2014.
Prizes: Prizes (in each category): 1st Prize: £500; 2nd Prize: £200; 3rd Prize: £100 plus 4 Highly Commended Awards of £25. All winners will be published in the Spring 2015 issue of Bare Fiction Magazine.

London Magazine Short Story

Closing date: 31st October, 2014.

The London Magazine has been responsible for publishing some of the most significant literature in British history. From Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats to T. S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath, Dylan Thomas and Doris Lessing, today it remains at the forefront with the best contemporary writing.

Tom Gallon Trust Awards

Atlantis Short Story Contest

Writers' & Artists' Yearbook Short Story Competition

Closing date: 15th February 2015.
Prizes: A cash prize of £500; a place on an Arvon residential writing course of your choice; publication of your story on www.writersandartists.co.uk.
Entry fee: None stated. Theme: No more than 2,000 words, on the theme of 'Joy'. All entries must be original unpublished prose of 2,000 words or fewer.

Allen Raine Short Story Competition

First prize is £200 and the closing date is 30 September. Word limit is between 1,000 and 7,500 words and entry is £5;

Asian Writer Short Story Prize

Chick Lit Novel Competition, Annual award for new and original fiction under 3,000 words. We’re looking for the next big thing in chick lit, a new voice whose work can resonate with British Asian women. You’ll need to send in the first 3000 words of your novel. Now closed but other contests coming.

Cinnamon Press

This website runs monthly competitions, as well as annual competitions. Contests include Short Story, Debut Novels, Poetry.

The Ruth Rendell short story competition

The biennial short story competition asks InterAct challenge writers to submit a short story of 1000 words or less in any genre.

Valentine's Day Short Story contest

The Valentine’s Day romantic story writing contest is open worldwide. The contestant must be 18 years or older to participate in the contest. No purchase is necessary to participate in the contest. Last contest started on 14th February 2013 and continue until 14th February 2014. Check each year for details.

Pitch Wars Novel contest

Pitch Wars is a contest where published/agented authors, editors, or industry interns choose one writer each, read their entire manuscript, and offer suggestions to shine it up for agents. The mentors also critique the writer’s pitch to get it ready for the agent round. Mentors also pick one alternate each in case their writer drops out of the contest. Writers send applications (query and first chapter of manuscript) to their four mentor choices that best fit their work. See the list online.

Authors First Novel Writing contest

Authors First is sponsoring its inaugural Novel Writing Contest to recognize the talents of fiction writers. Deadline: 09-30-2014

The judges will award the first-place writer with a prize of $5,000 and a publishing contract from independent publisher The Story Plant (est. 2008). The winner and five honorable mentions will each receive an iPad Mini packed with one year's worth of books release by The Story Plant. Entry guidelines: 1. Submit a manuscript of fiction over 40K words. 2. Fiction is open to all styles and themes. 3. Stories should demonstrate the writer's passion of the theme, strong storytelling, and writing skill.

International Children's Story competition organised by Kazdu international creative writing and translation service

The theme of the 2014 competition is “Grandad, grandma and I in our multicultural society”. Submit your story for children aged 1-3 years or 4-6 years no later than 31 August 2014.

Golden Kite awards

To be eligible you must be a current member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. All entries must be in final published and bound form, having been published within the current calendar year, and bearing a copyright date of 2014. If you are self-published, you may enter by sending four (4) copies of the book with a brief letter stating which category you are submitting to onr category only (Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text, Picture Book Illustration). Sid Fleischman Humor Award

The Sid Fleischman Humor Award is an award for authors writing children's stories in the genre of humor. The SCBWI established the award to honor humorous work, so often overlooked in children’s literature by other award committees. Entrants must be members of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. All Sid Fleischman Humor Award books should be sent as separate submissions.

Text Publishing's Prize for Children's and Young Adult's Stories

The next Prize is for 2015, so go look now and plan to have your entry ready for contest opening date. Awarded annually to the best manuscript written for young adults and children, the Text Prize has unearthed extraordinary, multi-award-winning novels and launched international publishing careers. The winner receives $10,000 and a publishing contract with Text Publishing.

 

Poetry Collections

Negative Capability Press poetry book contest

A prize of $2000, manuscript publication, and 25 copies will go to a single winner. Two runner-ups will be chosen for publication. Manuscripts that do not win will be considered for regular publication in the future. The final judge is Amy King of New York.

All entries must be submitted online between June 18, 2014 and October 15, 2014 (entries will be accepted until 11:59:59 PM (CST)). Please do not make revisions once your work is submitted; the winner will be given an opportunity to work with an editor before the manuscript is published.
